Udawaththa kele forest sanctuary
Celebrated as an amazing green oasis rising above the
bustling city center, this forest reserve was initially created as an exclusive
pleasure garden for the kandyan king and their families, the public were not
allowed entry, hence the old name thahanchi kele or forbidden forest. Now this 275 acre protected
home ancient trees and gaint creeping vines supports a vast array of endemic
fauna and flora. It is a particular favorite among bird watching enthusiasts
with more than 80 birds species identified. The entrance to the forest is up
from the temple of the tooth and overseas visitors are charged us$ 6 to enter.
